Use watercolor to splash the zine with color and continue to add to it creatively while learning a variety of techniques.   3:00-4:30 pm AGES 9-12 Needle Felted Friends Class Description: Explore sculpting with wool! Needle felting is a process which transforms wool fibers by interlocking and condensing them to create 2D or 3D works of art! Work with colorful wool and felting needles to learn and practice techniques as you create a fuzzy felted friend.   These workshops are a part of the Delaplaine's Community Outreach Initiative and are made possible through donations from the Helen L. Smith Scholarship Fund for Children and the Arts at the Community Foundation of Frederick County.

Ever wonder how much a medieval longsword weighs? 10 lbs? 20lbs? What if you were given the chance to master the majestic weapon that has long dominated the fantasy world? Get a sneak peek into the world of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). Join us for a demonstration of the basics of wielding a longsword, along with glimpses into the strategic techniques that defined its use. Regardless of whether you're a history buff, a fantasy fan, or a martial arts enthusiast, this will be a memorable experience. Please note, weather permitting, this program will be hold outdoors. This program is for teens in 6th through 12th grades (ages 11-18).

Have you HEARD the MOOS?! Join Middletown Library for a special storytime at South Mountain Creamery! After storytime, South Mountain Creamery staff will offer a farm tour for anyone interested! South Mountain Creamery - 8305 Bolivar Rd, Middletown, MD 21769 Storytime will happen rain or shine under the pavilion at South Mountain Creamery. Should thunderstorms be predicted that afternoon we will make the call day of by noon to cancel if necessary for safety reasons. We will post this update on our Facebook and FCPL program calendar pages, or you can call the branch at 301-600-7560 to check.    

Join us for a special fall themed storytime to kick off the annual Scarecrows March Down Mainstreet.   Storytime takes place at the Middletown Branch Library from 10:30-11:00am followed by a walk down to the Mainstreet Middletown Welcome Center.  Scarecrows March Down Mainstreet festivities take place between 12-4pm on Saturday the 17th. Bring the family to enjoy, vote, and yes, even marvel at the creativity that comes out each year in the form of these fantastical scarecrows!  Close to 60 scarecrows are expected to adorn Main Street!  Stroll through the downtown and vote on your favorites.  In addition, there will be snacks, music, and other Halloween-themed treats.   Scarecrows stay up until Halloween to keep the ghosts and goblins at bay!   The Middletown Branch Library will have small paper scarecrows to color, decorate, and display throughout the month of October in honor of this fun community event.  

Get creative this spooky season and participate in our Spooky House Design display using a variety of materials! FCPS Closed Submission Guidelines One Spooky House entry per person or team. House must specify entry category: Children, Teen or Team. House can be any theme as long as it is family friendly (Example: themes can be a favorite scene from a book, movie, television show, musical, time in history, etc.) Entries must be no larger than 16" x 12" x 12". Attach the entry form to the back of your House. Houses will be displayed in the branch until October 31. Please pick-up by COB Sunday, Nov 8th @ 5 pm after which they will be discarded/recycled. Entries must be submitted in person between Oct 16 - 30 at the Middletown Branch. A special Spooky House making session will be held on Oct 16, 1-3 pm, with materials provided while supplies last. Can't make it? That's okay. You are welcome to create one at home using your own materials and following the above guidelines. To be entered please drop off at the branch between Oct 16 - 30.

This time, we’re diving into Cinderella, but not the version you grew up with. This one’s Interstellar Cinderella! Perfect for curious minds who enjoy a twist, a laugh, and a fresh perspective.

In this lab, students use DNA electrophoresis to solve a mock crime by comparing DNA samples from a crime scene from suspects. Michael Turell, Research Entomologist,will be joining us with his collection and expertise to talk about insects and why they look the way they do. He'll also share some information about the City Nature Challenge. His 4-H Entomology Club, participated in the City Nature Challenge last year, and contributed 1,277 observations with at least 557 different species. We will be introducing the iNaturalist App on the library's iPad to show how we can contribute by identifying plants and creatures in our area. Ages 8-13.
