Guidelines for Materials Consideration and Reconsideration
FCPL customers may suggest purchases or request reconsideration of materials through the Library’s established processes. FCPL responds to these suggestions or concerns in a timely manner by reviewing the community member’s inquiry and analyzing the material in question.
Materials Consideration
Materials that are submitted for consideration will be reviewed against our Materials Selection Guidelines, Library Collection Policy, including professional guidelines set forth by the American Library Association as well as the professional experience and expertise of FCPL staff. Customers may submit a title for consideration through the “Suggest a Purchase” feature on the library’s website.
Several factors may impact the library’s decision to purchase an item including cost, availability, and the ability to obtain the item through interlibrary loan. Along with the professional experience and expertise of library staff, FCPL relies on the publishing industry and professional reviews to guide our selection of materials. The Library does not respond directly to these requests. Customers who request a purchase and ask for it to be placed on hold for them will receive a standard hold notice when the item becomes available.
Materials Reconsideration
Materials that are submitted for consideration will be reviewed against our Materials Selection Guidelines, Library Collection Policy, including professional guidelines set forth by the American Library Association as well as the professional experience and expertise of FCPL staff. Once an item has been added, it will not be removed unless it can be shown to violate those criteria.
Library card holders may submit an item for reconsideration here. Only one item may be submitted at a time. Submissions will only be considered from individuals not organizations. Submissions will be evaluated by the Library Collections Department, and a recommendation will be made to the Library Director. Materials put forth for reconsideration will remain available through the review process, and decisions will be reached within a month of submission. The Library Director’s decision is final. Customers will receive an email response. Items submitted for reconsideration will only be reviewed once in a five-year period.
