STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—and the STEM approach to teaching and learning has been a hot topic in education circles for a number of years. Integrating the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math begins as early as preschool, launching students on a pathway of learning that focuses on logical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st-century global workforce.

FCPL already supports STEM through our collections and programs but is increasing the emphasis on STEM to meet the needs of area students and to support the goals of local and statewide education initiatives.

Pop-Up Lab - Hands-on Science for Kids!

Urbana Library presents the Pop-Up Lab! When school is closed, the library is open! Join us from 10:00am until 5:00pm. Each Pop-Up Lab will feature a new, self-guided activity for kids to enjoy on their day off. No registration required. Computer Coding 101

Behind every computer game or app there is someone who wrote the code that made it all work. Join us for an hour of very beginning computer programming concepts and games and team up with others to test your skills in the language of computers. No previous coding skills needed. Ages 8-12.

Lego NXT robots feature a friendly code that tweens can understand. Join members of the RoboRangers 4-H Club as they work in small groups with participants to program a robot to run a specific mission. This is a STEM program geared toward children in 4th and 5th grades. Registration required.
