A Growing STEM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—and the STEM approach to teaching and learning has been a hot topic in education circles for a number of years. Integrating the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math begins as early as preschool, launching students on a pathway of learning that focuses on logical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st-century global workforce.

FCPL already supports STEM through our collections and programs but is increasing the emphasis on STEM to meet the needs of area students and to support the goals of local and statewide education initiatives.

Middle school students join us for a World Literature discussion series of classic and award winning books. Read, Discuss and Explore! Contact WA branch for more information and to enroll. All books will be available free through the library.

Petite Playgroup at the Library!

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 - 1:30pm to 2:45pm
Enjoy an hour of independent play during which you and your child can socialize with other parents, caregivers and children! Each playgroup will start with 15 minutes of stories, rhymes and songs led by your friendly children's librarian. The library will provide the space and a variety of educational toys to explore and share! For ages 0-3.

LEGO Challenge Days!

You bring your ideas, we provide the LEGOs! Are you up to it?
Join us for an afternoon of LEGO® fun! Build tall buildings, create mysterious scenes and have endless amount of STEM fun with LEGO® bricks at the library! Best for ages 5 and up with an adult.

Baltimore Checkerspot Butterflies Craft & Program

Did you know that the Baltimore Checkerspot is Maryland's state butterfly? Why are their numbers decreasing and what can we do to help? Learn all about this Maryland treasure from a Girl Scout earning her Gold Award and create a butterfly craft to take home. Ages 6-11, with an adult.
