A Growing STEM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—and the STEM approach to teaching and learning has been a hot topic in education circles for a number of years. Integrating the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math begins as early as preschool, launching students on a pathway of learning that focuses on logical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st-century global workforce.

FCPL already supports STEM through our collections and programs but is increasing the emphasis on STEM to meet the needs of area students and to support the goals of local and statewide education initiatives.

STEM Lab: Open Hour Drop-In Play

Stop by the Urbana Library Small Conference Room from 4-5pm on most Wednesdays to create and explore in the STEM Lab. Those younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult. *Ages preschool-18* Each month, we will highlight materials and instruments around a theme. TinkerTime - Junk Drawer STEAM

Age Group: 
Tinker with what is in the library's junk drawer - duct tape, washi tape, discarded craft supplies, cast-aside electronics and more! Spend the afternoon making and thinking about how science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics are woven together. Ages 6-12 are welcome.

Art Zone: Colorful Leaves

Friday, September 4, 2015 - 4:00pm to 4:30pm
In this beginning drawing class we will learn how to create colorful images using leaves. Participants will use real leaves found from nature to create colorful leaf rubbings. All materials and tools will be provided. No previous drawing skills are required.
