STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—and the STEM approach to teaching and learning has been a hot topic in education circles for a number of years. Integrating the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math begins as early as preschool, launching students on a pathway of learning that focuses on logical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st-century global workforce.

FCPL already supports STEM through our collections and programs but is increasing the emphasis on STEM to meet the needs of area students and to support the goals of local and statewide education initiatives.

Let's Explore the Moon!

Let’s explore the Moon! In this hands-on program we will learn how the moon was formed, how big it is and what it does for us.

In the final session of the Moon program we will learn why the moon looks like it does, how the craters were formed and why we have not visited the moon again.

Critter Talks

Join an experienced naturalist from the Catoctin Creek Nature Center for a fun hands-on live animal presentation. Participants of all ages are welcome to visit & interact with animals from Catoctin Creek Nature Center. This exciting nature program is free & fun for the whole family.

Just Design It: STEM design

What makes a good design? How do you create the next great idea or product? Come find out as we use the design process to create our own original products. We will ideate and sketch, build models and test them, and finally 3D print our final designs! Registrants must attend all three sessions. Ages 10-13.

Petite Playgroup at the Library!

Enjoy an hour of independent play during which you and your child can socialize with other parents, caregivers and children! Each playgroup will start with 15 minutes of stories, rhymes and songs led by your friendly children's librarian. The library will provide the space and a variety of educational toys to explore and share! For ages 0-3.

Retro Technology Petting Zoo

Join us for this fun and educational retro technology petting zoo! Explore past technology through this hands-on petting zoo where you'll have the opportunity to experience retro, classic technology in all forms.

Preschool Science Fair

This hands-on event is a fantastic way to experiment with basic scientific concepts using a variety of tools and materials. Explore and learn as you travel through 4 fun science fair stations. Be prepared to get a little messy. Register early as space is limited!
