STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—and the STEM approach to teaching and learning has been a hot topic in education circles for a number of years. Integrating the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math begins as early as preschool, launching students on a pathway of learning that focuses on logical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st-century global workforce.

FCPL already supports STEM through our collections and programs but is increasing the emphasis on STEM to meet the needs of area students and to support the goals of local and statewide education initiatives.

Make Batteries Using Fruits and Metals (ages 10 and up)

Age Group: 
Using lemons, oranges, and grapefruits with common metals such as copper wire, zinc-coated nails, and iron nails, this activity will focus on making simple batteries to power LED lights and run small motors.

STEM Curiosity Academy

Children entering Kindergarten in fall 2015 are invited to apply for the library’s very own STEM Curiosity Academy! Race balloons, learn about circuits, build structures, make “flubber,” and much more in this exciting 10-day series. Registration required. Applications will be accepted from this page beginning November 1 and do not guarantee acceptance to the program. You must be able to attend all 10 sessions to participate.

Monday Playgroup at the Library! (ages 0-3)

Enjoy an hour and a half of independent play during which you and your child can socialize with other parents, caregivers and children! The library will provide the space and a variety of educational toys to explore and share! For ages 0-3.

Introduction to Maryland State Parks Junior Rangers for 6-10 year olds

Park Rangers from Cunningham Falls State park bring this special program out of the park and into the library! Learn firsthand about what it takes to be a Junior Ranger and how to earn your patch by attending library and park programs. Your first step begins here! Participants in this session will receive priority registration for sessions 2, 3, and 4 at either C. Burr Artz Library or Thurmont Library. Can’t make it to the library sessions?
