Rosanne Cash just might be the living epitome of our 2014 Frederick Reads theme - The Music of Language. Passionate, intelligent, honest, and witty, she has led an extraordinary life as a brain surgery survivor, an award-winning singer-songwriter, an accomplished author, and a daughter of the legendary Johnny Cash.
Cash, who early in life wasn’t sure she wanted to be involved in the music industry, has risen through the ranks to become a cherished singer-songwriter. Her music weaves tales of love and heartbreak, delves into themes of the American South, tells narratives of her family’s storied musical history, and draws on many genres including country, folk, pop, rock, and blues.
Cash’s story is one of an artist finding herself while stepping out of the shadow of her famous, but troubled, father. Using music and the written word to navigate life and tell her story, Her works are a testament to the power of art, music, and love in surviving hardships, obstacles, and the loss of loved ones.
Cash won a Grammy Award in 1985 and has been nominated 12 more times. She is also the author of four books, including the New York Times bestselling memoir Composed, the children’s book Penelope Jane: A Fairy’s Tale, and the books Bodies of Water and Songs Without Rhyme: Prose by Celebrated Songwriters. In addition, her essays have appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and New York Magazine, and other major publications.
Each year, the Frederick Reads Committee - composed of representatives from nearly 20 local organizations—selects an author to showcase a chosen theme, engage new and long-time book lovers, and spark discussion and debate across a range of issues.
