The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program works to improve children's reading and communication skills by providing registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handler (as a team)to meet with and listen to children read.

The Thurmont Historical Society and the Thurmont Regional Library are hosting guest author, Jim Rada discussing his newest book: The Last to Fall: The 1922 March, Battles, & Deaths of U.S. Marines at Gettysburg. The book strong connection with Thurmont, and Emmitsburg. In 1922, more than a quarter of the U.S. Marine Corps through Frederick County on the way to Gettysburg. Along the way, the Marines were greeted by crowds and they camped at both the Frederick Fairgrounds and Hooker Lewis' farm in Thurmont going to and returning from Gettysburg.

The Thurmont Historical Society and the Thurmont Regional Library are hosting guest lecturer Art Callaham sharing the Fort Ritchie Story. Mr. Callaham worked on base for 21 years. Learn how 800 acres in Maryland and a mountain top in Pennsylvania evolved through ice production, the Maryland National Guard, an intelligence training center, and a tuberculosis hospital, to a critical communications link in the nation’s defense, becoming the operational support facility for a "super secret" underground facility that could have housed the president of the United States.

Big Read Book Discussion - 'The Things They Carried'

The 'Off the Shelf Book Club' is participating in The Big Read 2015 and will be discussing 'The Things They Carried' (1990), a book considered one of the best about the Vietnam War. Far from a combat story of pride and glory, it is a compassionate tale of the American soldier, brimming with raw honesty and thoughtful reflection.
